PEIMQG Mystery Quilt-Along Fabric Requirements

Welcome to the PEIMQG Mystery Quilt-Along!  The reader's digest details: the clues will be released on the first of each month, starting in September 2017 and ending in June 2018.  The final reveal will be April 1st, 2018, to give time for folks to finish their creations.

I designed this quilt to be Fat Quarter friendly. Using 12-14 FQ's, 2 accent colors and a background. Here are my fabrics. I have chosen a rainbow bundle and 2 shades of greys for accents and a white for my background.  Choose your favorite bundle or pull from your stash. Or, go wild and free and be super scrappy! You could even use assorted low-volume fabrics for your backgrounds!!

Fabric REQ:

9 block Layout Traditional
4 block Layout Traditional
 1 block

72” X 72”
(84” x 84”*)
48” x 48”
24” x 24”
72” x 72”

4 ½ yards
(6 yards *)

 2 ¼   yards

¾ yard

4 ½ yards

Accent (2 fabrics)

1 yard EACH

1/2 yard EACH

9" Width Of Fabric (WOF) EACH

1/2 yard EACH

Colors (12 fabrics)

Fat Quarters (18" x 22")
(+2  Fat Quarters*)

Fat Eighths
(9" x 22")

(4” WOF)

Fat Eighths

  • * OPTIONAL* - I have included the amount of fabric needed for an optional outer border that will increase the Traditional 9 blocks into a quilt that measures 84” x 84”. So instead of a FQ for fabrics 3 & 4, use a 1/2 yd. (Extra units will be made after the reveal.)
  •  Each block will measure 24.5” unfinished.
  •  The Fat Quarters (or Fat Eights) will be used in pairs (for example: 2 purple, 2 blue, 2 red, 2 yellow etc.). You do NOT need to make your quilt in rainbow colors. This quilt will be beautiful in any color combination you choose. Even single color palettes would work as long as there is enough contrast. I will discuss how to sort and label your fabric when Clue # 2 is released. Keep in mind, fabrics that read as solid or deeply saturated fabrics will work best (think Kaffe Fassett). Large floral prints or fabrics with too much neutral may not suit the design. But please use the fabrics that you love. Remember, these are only suggestions.
  •  If you are unsure which version (Modern or Traditional) will appeal to you more, may I suggest having 4 ½ yds. of background, 1 yd. EACH of your accents and 12 Fat Quarters. Cut and assemble according to the Traditional 4 block layout and after the reveal decide which version you would like to continue with.
  • Remember you have 2 months from the reveal to assemble and quilt before the Grand Prize parade.

First item of business had Helen accepting some charity blocks on Dianne's behalf. Great job everyone, these are looking great!

And on the topic of Charity quilts, Liz discussed the PEIMQG taking part in the QuiltCon 2018 Charity Quilt Challenge. The color palette this year is really fun and bright. We have decided to go ahead with this project, and have assembled a team to complete the quilt in the coming months.

Cathy discussed hosting a Mystery Quilt-Along, which the group was very excited about. Some details discussed can be found here. But, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. Fabric requirements will be released in July and the first clue will be released September 1st.
