PEIMQG February 2017 Meeting

The weather on PEI was unseasonably mild for our February meeting. We had 13 members and 1 guest in attendance. PEIMQG President Heather J, is enjoying much warmer weather in Savannah, Georgia. attending QuiltCon while on vacation. So, in her place Vice President Colleen took the lead for the meeting. After introducing ourselves to our newest guest Maretza, we got things underway.

January Queen Bee Dawn collected these pretty purple blocks:

January Queen Bee Lydea collected these black and white Log cabin blocks.

February's Queen Bee Colleen had this red block that may look a bit familiar ( it will be combined with Dawn's Block to complete the quilt pattern). Colleen has requested using red fabrics, either tone on tone, solid or batiks.) she has provided the background.

The other Queen Bee for February is Liz and she has chosen this Plus and X's block, she has provided cutting instructions for the pieces needed, in the kits with the corner fabric she provided. She has asked that all the remaining fabrics CONTRAST each other, but to otherwise have fun. She has also created a tutorial as well on how the block is constructed and you can find it here.

Next up we had some progress to show from our Canada's 150th Celebration quilt. The quilt is about 2/3 completed, and we will be getting together for another special sew-in to finish things up.  We will be making slab blocks and having fun, Sunday, February 26th, 12-7pm at the West Royalty Sobeys.

Liz was busy getting month 2 of our Round Robin challenge sorted and traded so they could all go home with someone new. Round 2 has us adding another 2.5" unfinished border to the remaining sides from the first round. Don't forget to sign and date the label if one was provided in the box.  REMINDER: please be sure that all boxes are turned in at the next month's meeting. If you are unable to attend, please make arrangements for your box to be present.

Queen Bee Liz's Plus and X's Block Tutorial

This month Liz is our Queen Bee, and she has provided the following tutorial for making her Plus and X's Block.  She requests that you use bright fabrics that contrast with each other. As stated she will provide the green "D" fabric. Please refer to the instruction sheet she provided at the meeting for cutting measurements and fabric requirements.

Plus and X's Block 10.5" unfinished

Cut fabric according to instruction sheet.  I will be providing the Material for D Blocks, the rest please use bright colours and contrast colours for sections.  I am not opposed to scrappy fabrics as long as I can see the plus and x sections clearly.

Draw a line diagonally on all D Blocks on wrong side of fabric.  I have provided the material for the D Blocks.

Place D Blocks on A Blocks as shown, watching carefully of placement.

Sew on marked lines.

Press corners open then, trim away underneath bulk, 1/4" from sewn diagonal line.

Press corners out and square to 4.5"

Layout pieces as shown. Time now to start piecing together.  Piece centre, top & bottom row.

Now sew rows together

Press block.  I also pressed seems open on the back to avoid bulk.

Square block to 10.5".  Voila your Block is finished.

Thank-you, I hope you found my Tutorial helpful.  Liz

PEIMQG Sew-In February 2017

For the last few weekends, the PEIMQG members have been very busy working on a quilt to for Canada's 150th Celebration.  We have been coming together to have fun and work on completing the blocks needed to assemble this project.  What we needed was leaves, lots and lots of leaves. Big ones, small ones, and even some in between.  Here is the concept for what we want the quilt to look like.

Here's Liz making some Large Paper Pieced Leaves. .

For the medium sized Leaves we used a traditionally pieced block. Here's Linda cutting up all the pieces.  With all the pieces cut in advance these blocks came together very quickly.

Here's Velda , putting some blocks together, Looking good!!

Next up we made wee little leaves, aren't these just so cute. Here is an assortment of the blocks we've made.

We have also made "slab blocks" of our background. These are a lot of fun to make. Here's Carol and Jean, working on some background.

Here's Liz adding another strip...

Heather J sewing slabs and Dawn paper piecing.

We were all very excited to start laying out what we had made so far. Here's a start...

Coming together...

 Some rearranging....

Starting to sew it together...

It's really starting to come together.... Here are a few more photos taken during the last few weeks. It's been fun to get together and work on this group project. Thanks to everyone who has helped by washing, cutting and ironing fabric. Sewing and trimming blocks, removing papers, and pressing seams. We should all be very proud of the work we have accomplished so far. Next Sunday we have another Sew-In scheduled, and should be well on our way to completing the top. Hope to see all hands on deck with sewing machines in tow.
